Its interesting that the Times left out that Jim Womack is the founder of the Lean Enterprise Institute, but I don't believe it was intentional. The Lean movement is really what the next business model will be like, and the sooner GM changes (and they have been pursuing it haphazardly over the past decade or so do some research into NUMI) instead of shying away from a defining moments they will see less issues with the UAW. Because it is driven by the workers.

You have to keep in mind that lean did come from studying Toyota, but Toyota was built on the Ford business model. And why not follow Toyota, they are now the leading seller of autos in the US and are positioned to stay there for quite a long time.

@ 4:29 -

The Circle:

UAW demands pensions--> Auto industry grants pensions--> Auto industry buckles under weight of pensions--> Auto industry reduces workforce--> Less workers=less Union bargaining power--> Union strike has less force due to reduced bargaining power...

EQUALS: Union has less power against weak, failing Auto industry because it demanded pensions in the first place.

The Circle:

UAW demands pensions–> Auto industry grants pensions–> Auto industry buckles under weight of pensions–> Auto industry reduces workforce–> Less workers=less Union bargaining power–> Union strike has less force due to reduced bargaining power…

EQUALS: Union has less power against weak, failing Auto industry because it demanded pensions in the first place.
